PRESIDENT REPORT
Good Day Amateurs.
Our classes are now completed for this year. This was a experiment in
expanding the classes over a longer period with more classes. I would
like to thank the following amateurs for their time and enthusiasm with
teaching the Amateur Radio Basic classes. Bill Wood VE5EE, Bruce
Rattray VE5RC, Rick Rickwood VE5RJR, George Harwood VE5UU, Bill Smith
VE5AAR, Stan Ewert VE5SC, Terry White VE5LTW, Allan Tidball VE5LAT
(coordinator & instructor). You are to be commended for your
kindness and sharing of your knowledge.
I would like to congratulate Regina's newest Amateur Radio Operator Roy
Leonard with Basic and HF Qualification. A job well done. I am sure
that you will enjoy your new hobby. Roy has requested a call of
VA5RKL,which has not yet been confirmed by Industry Canada.
This month instead of a presentation we will discuss and finalize the
planning of a transmitter hunt. This will be the first of a series of
hunts this year. April also brings our topic of ongoing concern,
Burnside!! It is very important to have as much help with this site
this year. We have purchased the paint last year but were unable to
fulfill the restoration job. If this facility is not taken care of
soon, the deterioration of the structure will soon effect the integrity
of the whole building, rendering it unsafe. If this facility is
something that you would like to keep using, then your help would be
greatly appreciated by the other RARA Club members that would like to
continue to use the facility.
So when our Burnside Restoration Coordination Team Calls
upon you to assist with the maintenance of the facility please set some
time aside for assistance.
See you at the Meeting.

NEW HAM
Congratulations and welcome to Roy Leonard, the first of this years
RARA ham classes to pass his exam. He is awaiting his callsign. Several
other classmates will be writing their exams in the coming weeks.
IRLP NEWS
A new IRLP node will be appearing in Moose Jaw shortly. The repeater
will be on 145.21 - It is sponsored by SARL.
Dave Cameron, VE7LTD, the developer of the IRLP system will be honored
at the Dayton Hamfest with the award for Technical Excellence for his
work in amateur radio.
We are continuing to experience propogation problems on the UHF link
connecting the node to the VE5WM repeater. We expect that antenna
improvements will be completed the middle of this month to solve this
problem.
Want to know how your 2 meter station sounds. You can use the IRLP
system to hear for yourself. There is a facility called the Echo
Reflector which will "playback" your transmission. To do this, dial
9990 on the VE5WM repeater and make a short transmission. In a few
seconds it will play it back for you. When you are done, be sure to
disconnect by dialling 73 otherwise the system will continue repeating
any transmissions to the repeater.
REPORT ON THE RESTRUCTURING OF AMATEUR RADIO
The Committee on the Restructuring of Amateur Radio in Canada , headed
by MidWest Regional Director Bj. Madsen - VE5FX - has completed the
analysis of the results obtained from the recent survey. This data has
been accepted by RAC's Board of Directors and is now being released to
all Canadian Amateurs. You can download a .PDF file of the complete
report from the RAC Website. This site also offers a PowerPoint
presentation which summarizes the report and is suitable for a
presentation to your club. Look for a link on the HomePage at

DO-IT-YOURSELF IONOSPHERE
Radio Amateurs can do much to heat up the ionosphere and improve DX
conditions, the South African Radio League was told by a prominent
space weather researcher. "By many radio amateurs transmitting at the
same time, the resultant RF hitting the ionosphere will cause it to
ionise and become active like during the high sunspot years", he said.
He made the point that during major DX contests, the 10 metre band
opens up while the day before and the day immediately after the contest
the band is dead. This conclusively proves my point that high RF levels
impacting on the ionosphere does the trick.
