*REPEATER NEWS*

NEW REPEATERS
Lots of new repeaters are slated to come on the air in Saskatchewan. Preeceville SK VE5SS 145.31 (-) mHz Birch Hills SK VE5VY 145.43 (-) mHz Invermay SK (frequency yet to be determined) Also look for the new Moose Jaw IRLP repeater coming soon on 145.21 (-) and the Weyburn repeater, VE5WEY 146.70 will shortly be connected to the IRLP system. Let us hope that the number of repeater users expands at the same rate as repeaters.

REGINA IRLP NODE BACK IN ACTION

The Regina IRLP node on VE5WM is now operating normally due to antenna changes made at Mosaic Stadium. Bill VE5EE, Terry VE5TLW and Stan VE5SC made antenna changes which resulted in a better signal path to the T.C. Douglas building. Another antenna will be installed at a later date to make the modification more permanent.

VE5UHF REPEATER INTERFERENCE
An intermittent interfering signal has shown up on the output frequency of the VE5UHF repeater (444.250 mHz). It appears to be coming from a radiolocation device somewhere near Regina. Amateur radio uses the 440 mHz band on a secondary basis to radiolocation, however according to the IC database, Industry Canada has not issued a licence to any company to use this frequency, so this operation may technically be illegal. Efforts are being made by direction finding and other means to locate the source of this signal. This might be a good club project, a
real-life
hidden transmitter hunt. Due to the intermittent operation of this signal that may present challenges.

U.S. REPEATER LISTINGS

WE WIN AGAIN

At the Saskatchewan Hamfest in Moose Jaw, the RARA was again presented with the QC Field Day Trophy for being the club with the highest Field Day score. Well done crew. Also at the Hamfest, VE5RKL, Roy was given the award for the outstanding new amateur.

ANOTHER SILENT KEY

We are saddened to report that another Regina area ham has passed away. George Ford, VE5GLF died in August. He was very active on the Snowbird net on 20 meters.

WATCH THAT HANDHELD DURING STORMS

Emergency room physicians have documented cases in which lightning strikes have caused disabling injuries to those using various electronic devices including iPods and cellphones. The devices do not attract lightning, but appear to make injuries worse if you take a secondary (minor) lightning hit. Ruptured eardrums and ongoing auditory problems are common. But if you take a primary lightning hit, you probably won't have any worries whatsoever. -CEG

DELANO SHORTWAVE FACILITY TO BE SHUT DOWN

If you have ever done any Short Wave listening, you have probably heard the station in Delano California broadcasting VOA and Armed Forces programs The International Broadcasting Bureau (IBB) will stop shortwave broadcasting from Delano, California, at the end of October according to Radio World. The facility will be converted to "cold storage standby status" but some equipment may be moved to other locations in the IBB network.

The Delano station began shortwave broadcasts to the
Pacific Theater of World War II in 1944. Delano is located about 140 miles north of Los Angeles.
