KITBUILDERS OF THE WORLD REJOICE

Heathkit is back in business. The following is a letter from Heathkit telling the world that they are back in the Kit business:

Thank you for your overwhelming response to our announcement that Heathkit is back into the Do-it-Yourself kits business. We received many great suggestions for kits you would like to build. We will be releasing Garage Parking Assistant kit (GPA-100) in late September and soon after the Wireless Swimming Pool Monitor kit will be available.  Based on your input, we are looking at developing amateur radio kits. Our goal is to have kits available by the end of year.

Please keep your suggestions coming so that we can continue to bring you
interesting, unique Heathkit products.

STANDARDIZED POWER CONNECTORS

Many clubs and ARES groups are going to a standardized power connector.  The advantage is, that in an emergency any piece of radio equipment can be connected to any power supply in case of failure. And it is just a good idea to have your equipment so that it can easily be disconnected for servicing. The connectors are color coded and can't be reversed. They are easy to install.
What is emerging as the standard is the Anderson Powerpole connector.  They are available locally at a reasonable price and if there is enough interest, the club could do a bulk purchase to further the cost. You can discuss this at the Wednesday club meeting.

TECHNICAL COMMITTEE REPORT

Normally amateur radio activity hits a low during the summer months but this summer was a very busy one for the technical committee.  A work party was organized to remove the VE5WM repeater equipment from both the CBC Site and the Mosaic Field site. A tower crew was engaged to remove the antennas from the CBC tower as well. All the recovered equipment was put into storage in the ARES storage area in the J Block. A big thank you to all who volunteered.

All equipment surplus to our needs will be sold at the Regina Fall Flea Market in November.

As well, work continues on the VE5YQR repeater. A new link radio will be installed which should improve the audio quality on signals coming from the IRLP node.

WEBSITE OF THE MONTH

How would you like to buy an old commercial short wave communications station installation to use for your ham station? One lucky ham did. Read the story at:

Mothers, don't let your sons grow up to be towermen. Go to the following website for some dramatic film of a project gone wrong. It's the little things that get you every time.
