The VE5WM Repeater Story

...submitted by Stan, VE5SC.

Technical Details

The VE5WM repeater transmitter on (146.88 mHz) is located at the CBC

Television tower approximately 4 miles northeast of Regina city limits.

The antenna is located at the 240 foot mark of the 690 foot tower which

also houses two TV transmitters and 4 FM transmitters. The antenna is

a co-linear, directional toward the city with 9 db of gain.

The receiver (146.28 mHz) is located on top of Taylor Field near downtown
Regina and the audio is sent via a UHF link to the repeater transmitter site.
This centrally located non-directional antenna gives better city pickup and allows
for the elimination of duplexers at the transmitter.

The controller is an S-com 7K which works in conjunction with an RLC6 Link
controller. The repeater is also connected to the Internet Radio Linking Project
to allow linking to other repeaters around the world.
The Internet access for IRLP is located at the T.C. Douglas building in south
Regina and connected to the repeater via a UHF link.
The repeater is dialed up to the provincial network Monday through Friday evenings
at 9:00 pm local time for the Saskatchewan Link Net using the 9300 reflector.
It is also connected to the reflector during periods of severe weather as a service
to travellers and when required by the ARES organization.

History

RARA established the first repeater in the province in the early 60s. It

was located on the Sask. Power Building and originally operated with a

non-standard pair of 146.46 input and 147.33 output. This was because of

the number of hams who had 147.33 crystals in their single frequency

radios. As multi-frequency radios became more common the repeater

changed to a standard pair. Later it was moved to Armour Siding, just

north of the city, where it operated until it was relocated to its

present site. The callsign, which was originally VE5SS, was changed to

VE5WM in honour of Bill Munday an active member of the club who
is now a Silent Key.
